Around 1979 the American architect Bob Gamm was struck by an invention that will prove capable of changing his life. A enthusiast jogger, Bob was trying to solve a practical problem vexing all the people that during their races would prefer wearing very light clothes without pockets: where should they keep their keys and moneys during their daily training? The answer was quite simple after all: into the shoes. More specifically within a tiny pocket secured by a zipper attached to the side of upper. Thus the model KangaROOS was born, the first shoe with a lateral marsupial pouch – yeah, whence their name. The efficient industrial and marketing device put to work by Gamm allowed the brand to become much popular very soon over the US, enjoying an average 700 thousand shoes being sold every months over the early Eighties.

The success trajectory of the KangaROOS incurred a declining period by the decade’s end, an epoch which also created the Sidney’s that we present in these pages: a classic running model according to the tradition of a brand which has become quite popular within hip-hop culture, especially in England, Netherland, and Germany. In Italy they are rarely seen due to distribution problems connected to the presence on the market of the well-known Italian brand, Canguro.
